SEC Warns Investors of Cryptocurrency Scams

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (OIEA) Office of Investor Education and Advocacy and the Enforcement Division’s Retail Strategy Task Force (RSTF) issued an investor alert about crypto investment scams last week.

The notice states that “scammers continue to exploit the growing popularity of digital assets to lure retail investors into scams, often resulting in huge losses,” adding:

Some investors may have FOMO [fear of missing out]As the price of some digital assets has skyrocketed in recent years, she will miss an opportunity to become very wealthy.

The notice identifies some of the warning signs of a scam. “Guaranteed high investment returns…with little or no risk” is a classic fraud warning sign. The Securities and Exchange Commission has made it clear that scammers may post false historical returns on their websites to demonstrate high investment returns.

Another sign is that sellers are not licensed or registered. The Securities and Exchange Commission stated that “unlicensed and unregistered sellers commit many securities frauds targeting retail investors in the United States.”

In addition, scammers often create investment returns to attract investors. The Securities and Exchange Commission also warned that “if an investment ‘opportunity’ sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Finally, the notification warns of “fake certificates”. The Securities and Exchange Commission stressed that investors should not rely solely on testimonials when making an investment decision, explaining:

Scammers sometimes pay people—for example, actors pretending to be regular people turned millionaires, social media influencers, and celebrities—to promote the investment on social media or in a video.
